About Wai Tapu Lūʻau

Wai Tapu Lūʻau at Kālia Theatre

Wai Tapu is an immersive cultural experience hosted at Kālia Theatre, located on the western end of Waikīkī. Wai Tapu, or sacred water, honors the waters that have always given this place its life. The name of Kālia draws inspiration from the native Hawaiian tree whose bark was once twisted into cordage to bind together the hale, the waʻa, and the fishponds of this storied place. Together, the names carry everything Wai Tapu celebrates: the vibrant place, the extraordinary people, the changing of eras, and the ancestors who traversed the vast Pacific on double-hulled canoes and made Kālia their home. Through interactive cultural activities, chant, dance, and storytelling, Wai Tapu brings the story of these sacred waters to life.

The Name

Kālia is rooted in a native Hawaiian tree whose bark was used as cordage woven into the hale (home), the waʻa (canoe), and the fishponds that sustained the people of this place for generations. To say the name is to hold the tree and the land together in the same breath.

Since time immemorial, the abundance of Hawaiʻi's waters has brought life to the land. From the clouds above to the highest mountain peaks, rippling waterfalls feed the watersheds and flow into streams that fill the springs and fishponds by the hundreds and carved the land that we see today.

Wai Tapu, meaning sacred water, signifies the source of life and the greatest gift.
